Building Code and Building Requirements
Building Code
A building code is any standard rules for safety that must be followed during the construction of buildings. Building codes vary in their requirements. In the Philippines, we follow Presidential Decree 1096 or the National Building Code of the Philippines.
Buildings are required to follow standards on:
- Intended Occupancy and Use
Buildings must be designed and constructed according to their specific purposes. - Life Safety
Adequate exits must be present in the building. In case a fire breaks out, occupants should have no trouble leaving the area. - Fixed Fire Protection Systems
The building must have fire protection systems in place. They must respond adequately to the needs of the building. - Spacing of Structures
Buildings must be built with sufficient spacing among each other. While it is important to consider convenience, efficiency, and savings, it is still more important that there is enough room between buildings so that fires do not spread easily. - Height Requirements
It is good practice to limit the height of structures to help save lives. This will not only limit the amount of material that might burn, but it will also aid firefighters during response. - Fire Retarding Features
Not only must a building be equipped with fire protection systems, it must also be constructed in a way that fires are not able to spread quickly.
